Rally helmets are a requirement for all organised stage rallies worldwide, whether that’s a regional series or the WRC; although the FIA standards are different depending on the series.

There are a few important factors when choosing a specialised motorsport helmet for competing in a rally. You need the best noise cancellation, reliability, it needs to meet (and in the case of Stilo, exceed) the required FIA safety standard and more than anything, the fit needs to be perfect. Please give us a call to discuss the custom fitting of rally helmets.

Stilo is the market leader in the rally helmet world. In days gone, every rally crew used a Peltor helmet and intercom, but Stilo now dominates the WRC and most other rallies across the globe.

There are two FIA standards for rally helmets: FIA-8859 and FIA-8860. Standards will be followed by a date (year) - this date is not the date of manufacture or the model year, but it’s the date the standard was introduced.

FIA-8859 is the minimum standard for any rally helmet, while FIA-8860 is required for higher level competition, World Rally Championships for instance.

Rally helmets can also be used for other forms of motorsport such as Dakar Racing, Rallycross, Comp safari, AWDC, track days and on circuits for test days.

What is a rally helmet?

A rally helmet is usually open faced (though full face are available) helmet with a fixed or sometimes movable microphone boom. Rally helmets require noise reducing headphones the connect to an intercom via a wired or Bluetooth connection. All rally helmets are homologated to FIA-8859 standards as a minimum.

What helmet do I need for rallying?

Can you use a racing helmet for rallying?

As long as it has the lastest FIA safety standadrds it can be used for rallying. Although, it will generally not have the built in intercom system to communicate with.
